Things I'm Loving this Week...

Here are some things I am absolutely loving this week:

Selby Chain-Link Hampers (This hamper by Pehr Designs is too cute for dirty laundry and I love all the colors, especially the blue.)

My Newest Thrifty Obsession {Glass Decanters}

Did I really need to start another collection? The answer is no, I did not, but here I am with two lovely crystal decanters and the strong desire for more.

Last week we were in Connecticut car shopping (yipee!) and of course, before I left the area I had to make a stop at the local thrift store.

I swear to you, I walked past those decanters about five times, staring at them before I even picked one up. As I tried to talk myself out of buying the decanters all I could think of is how they would add a beautiful sparkly element to my dining room. So I caved. I purchased the two for $4.99 each. I wasn't sure about the price, but now that I've looked for additional pieces on Ebay, I think I got a great deal!

Natural Curiosities Indoor Garden

I keep back issues of my favorite decorating magazines for inspiration and ideas.

One picture that I absolutely love from Country Living Magazine shows this little area of a home filled with plants, cloches and bits of nature.

Amped-Up Telephone/Gossip Chair

I have this odd little list written down in my blogging journal of things I want to find someday at thrift stores, estate sales etc.
One of my most wanted items was a telephone/gossip chair. And it just so happens that I was able to cross that off my list a couple of Saturdays ago when I found this piece at Savers for $4.99.
The finish was horrible, but I felt it really could be pretty awesome.  Immediately, I thought it needed to go in a totally different direction than it's mid-tone stain and would be prefect painted a bright color.

Things I'm Loving this Week...

Here are some things I am absolutely loving this week:

Craigslist (I scored this old piece of glass from a former store front for FREE! I have no immediate plans for it, but how could I pass this one up? I just love the hand painted lettering and the history it holds.)

Decorating the {Dining Room} Walls

Or, What I did while my boys had a friend over and were busy trading Pokemon cards and LEGO pieces for a couple of hours and left me alone.

With a successful play date going on upstairs, I took the opportunity to finish hanging some things in my nearly updated dining room.

If you are newly following me, I thank you so much for your support of my blog and confidence in my design ideas and projects! In case you've missed what other objects I've hung on my dining room walls, here is a quick recap.

The $6.99 thrift store painting.

Book Papered Accent Wall

Work is slowly, but surely continuing in my dining room. After evaluating what I had already done in the room I decided that I needed some sort of accent wall to balance off the bold curtain fabric.

The Drama of the Estate Sale...

I saw an ad on craigslist yesterday for an estate sale.

I was intrigued because:

  1. It was very close to my house.
  2. It was in a neighborhood with beautiful, old homes that I love.
  3. The ad mentioned that since Sunday was the second day of the sale everything was 50% off.

Shabby, Distressed Pedestal Bowls

I really love lightening and brightening out of date objects with white paint.  Why is it that something painted white and distressed to appear old looks modern to me?

I had these two mismatched pedestal bowls (the larger red one is another cast-off from my Mom and the smaller stained one is from the thrift store).

Cloches & Specimens

I love, love, love decorating with nature. Branches, plants, shells, rocks and sometimes even sweet little birds nests, included.

So, while summer might be on the downswing, I'm just not ready for fall yet. I squeezed in a couple more summer decorating ideas to showcase my favorite natural finds.

I started with a medium-sized cloche from a local country decor shop, a thrifted silver tray and a cardinal's nest (complete with an unhatched egg and some other shell remnants) removed from my Mom's yard long after the little family was done with it.

Antique Window Art

If you follow me on Facebook then you might remember me finding three antique windows with a free sign in front of an old farmhouse recently.

Two of them are stored away, waiting for inspiration, and one has taken up residence in our master bedroom as wall art.

Rustic, Glam Initial Table

I bought this delicate, little demilune table at the thrift store a couple of months ago for just a few dollars. It was sturdy and well made, but most of the finish had been worn away.

Come, Sit on My Porch...

...because I think it is looking kind of cozy right now. The other day I shared a little bit of my porch makeover here.

And now here is the space all put together.

Thrifty Porch Sneak Peak

Should the weather ever cooperate - (read:  not be 95 degrees, with high humidity and no rain) I will definitely be spending more time on my back porch.

I plan to:
1.  Watch my boys fight play.

2.  Drink iced coffee and iced tea.

3.  Read decorating magazines and books.

4.  Watch the birds that frequent our backyard.

5.  Sit and talk decorating with my Mom.

Our porch is tiny, but I've made the most of it with a small budget and some smart thrifting. I love how it looks like a little extension of our home and I tried to include accessories that you would typically have inside.  Most everything that needs to be is protected is under the roof, so I'm not worried about damage of any sort.

My Inspiration Journal

This week I have found wonderful inspiration in nature.  I truly am not an outdoorsy person, but even with the extreme heat and lack of rain we have had this summer our yard is filled with color and life and I can't help but be inspired.

I love this blue jay family.  We've watched the hardworking mama show her babies around the yard and stopping at the best places to find food and water.  Pictures do not do justice to their gorgeous shades of grays and blues.
